Alessandro Licciardello: painting between Memory, Matter, and Movement
Born in Catania in 1979, Alessandro Licciardello’s artistic journey began after graduating from the Liceo Artistico in 1999, followed by a formative year in New York that deeply shaped his creative vision. Back in Italy, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania, studying Painting under Professor Antonio Bruno. During this time, he joined the Soqquadro collective, a group of young artists exploring shared expressive research, and participated in numerous group exhibitions.
In 2005, he earned his degree in Painting with top honors. Between 2006 and 2010, he led art workshops at youth centers in Scordia, Lentini, and Francofonte, promoting art as a vehicle for personal and social growth. His works have been exhibited internationally, including in Italy, the United States, and Canada, where he developed a distinctive and personal pictorial language.
From 2013 to 2020, Licciardello taught Painting at a high school in Milan, nurturing the artistic development of countless students. In 2021, he returned to Sicily, settling in Marsala, where he continues to balance teaching with his own artistic practice, producing commissioned works and participating in exhibitions and cultural events.
Licciardello’s work is rooted in conscious figuration, infused with echoes of Futurism and a range of inspirations spanning human and animal figures as well as landscapes. His canvases vividly capture the colors, atmospheres, and spirit of his native land, while engaging in dialogue with the historical avant-gardes. He draws particular inspiration from German Expressionism and the Primitivism of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, reinterpreting their approaches for the contemporary era.
Many of his works combine expressive intensity with social commentary, tackling themes such as the hypocrisy of bourgeois society, existential loneliness, and the alienation of the individual.
